10 Tips for Writing a Meaningful Piece

As you may know, I love to write. I spend a lot of time perfecting my work, and I have a few tricks to share with you. Here are the 10 tips for writing a meaningful piece!
1. Write what you know.
Don’t make up propaganda just to make your story sound better. Pick a topic that you understand and provide detail on that. Being a confident in your information is key when writing.
2. Pick a tense and stick with it.
This tip drives me CRAZY! So many people have the tendency to switch between past and present tense in their writing. For most, past tense comes more naturally, so if they try to step out of their comfort zone and they are in “the zone”, it is common that they might flip back to past tense. Just make sure that you are always paying attention to what you are writing, since it can sneak up on you!
3. Find which point of view is better for you.
As a writer, I love putting a character’s opinion in a story, so that makes me a better first-person writer. So as you are writing, whether it is in school, for work, or for fun, experiment to see what works best for you.
4. Stay on topic.
When you are “on a roll”, sometimes you go off topic. You may start rambling on about a small detail that was only meant for embellishment. So when that happens, don’t be afraid to hold down the delete button for a few sentences and start from scratch.
5. Pick an audience.
When writing, your audience is your biggest critic. While your readers may have diverse tastes, you do t have to cater to everyone. Picking a group of people (ex: fantasy lovers, sci-fi geeks, etc) can be difficult, but once you have chosen your audience, stick with it. You can’t please everyone all the time, so please everyone some of the time.
6. Write first, then pick a title.
To be a great writer, you write down your ideas instead of just writing to, well, write. So instead of thinking of a title first, wait until an idea comes to you, and if you aren’t sitting at your computer, write it down in a notepad for later.
7. Not EVERY paragraph needs to be 5 sentences long.
Impact plays a huge roll in writing, as well as the storyline. One sentence paragraphs can make a huge difference in the writing and how your reader feels. For example:
As the door creaked behind me, the lights went out.
And then I heard a scream.
Interesting, right?
8. Practice, practice... PRACTICE!
When you first start writing, you may not have a natural talent. Although it may not seem like it, practice is really valuable as a writer. It will definitely make a difference!
9. Your writing ISN’T permanent!
Many people think that whatever you put in your paper (or Word Document these days) is permanent. BUT IT IS NOT! Everything is changeable and if you don’t like it, get rid of it! Editing is key!
10. “Don’t write because you want to say something, write because you have something to say.”
I love this quote and I completely agree. If you just want to hear yourself write, then don’t write at all. You have to have an important idea or story that you want to share to make a great story. So don’t just sit there, go share your ideas! I know that you have one!
